Folk Star Mary Travers Passes

Friday September 18, 2009

Sad news in the music world: Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2009, after several years of battling leukemia. The folk music star, along with band members Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow, introduced the world to classics like Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," John Denver's "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "I Dig Rock and Roll Music," and, of course, "Puff the Magic Dragon."

The trio's foray into kids' music, 1969's Peter, Paul and Mommy, was one of the first instances of a big-time, major-label music star or band making an album specifically for children. The charming, low-key LP was definitely a respite from the troubling times of the late '60s, providing kids and their grownups with their own call to peace in the tune "Day is Done."
