Free Christmas Music for Kids!

Wednesday December 16, 2009

Hurry on over to Tangerine Tambourine's website for a free download of the sing-along Christmas classic "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!" The Decatur, Alabama-based band recently released their self-titled debut kids' album, showcasing a range of influences from The Beatles to Memphis R&B to contemporary country. Their version of "Rudolph," though, sounds as if The Supremes stopped by Muscle Shoals Sound Studios for a little holiday fun!

Weekly Kids' Music Charts

Sunday December 13, 2009

Very little change in the Kids' Music Top 10: the Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb: Original TV Soundtrack stays at #1 for the ninth week in a row, followed by virtually the same nine CDs as last week. So rather than talk more about the Top 10 best-selling children's CD for the week of December 6, 2009, let's discuss new music that should be on the charts.

  • Wayne Potash - A Day in the Life: A brilliant, low-key concept album detailing a day in the life of a young kid. These 24 short tunes take musical cues from Pete Townshend, The Bevis Frond, Paul McCartney, The Beatles, and Johnny Cash.
  • Caspar Babypants - More Please!: The sophomore kids' album from Chris Ballew, formerly of The Presidents of the United States of America. Ballew's alter ego delivers another great set of reconstructed traditional tunes and new songs that sound like classics.
  • Dean Jones - Rock Paper Scissors: The second solo children's CD from Jones, a member of the kids' band Dog On Fleas. This time around, Jones enlists The Felice Brothers to create an album of rambunctious tunes with sometimes cosmic and insightful lyrics.

Kids' Music GRAMMY Nominations

Wednesday December 9, 2009

The 52nd GRAMMY Award Nominations have been announced, including Best Musical Album For Children. Here are this year's picks by the Academy:

  • American Heroes #3 - Jonathan Sprout [Sprout Recordings]
  • Banjo To Beatbox - Cathy & Marcy, with special guest Christylez Bacon [Community Music, Inc.]
  • Family Time - Ziggy Marley [Tuff Gong Worldwide]
  • Great Day - Milkshake [Milkshake Music]
  • Jumpin' & Jammin' - Greg & Steve [Greg & Steve Productions]
  • Pete Seeger Tribute: Ageless Kids' Songs - Buck Howdy [Prairie Dog Entertainment]

Marley's kids' music debut is the best in this list of nominations simply because he composed some great pop/reggae songs for Family Time, despite the fact that it's a children's CD. Having said that, though, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer's Banjo To Beatbox might earn the veteran duo yet another kids' music GRAMMY based on the inclusion of newcomer Christylez Bacon alone.

Sounding like a cross between Doug E. Fresh and A Tribe Called Quest's Phife Dog, the young Washington, D.C. native rocks "It's the Beatbox" and three other tunes on Banjo To Beatbox. Christylez (pronounced: chris-styles) is a talent to watch...expect to hear much more from him in the future.

Last-Minute Meat-Free Thanksgiving Song!

Thursday November 26, 2009

Happy Thanksgiving morning! For those of you celebrating Turkey Day without the turkey, check out Todd McHatton's "The Happy Vegan Thanksgiving Song". The loping, laid-back, harmony-laden track, a little reminiscent of The Meat Puppets' mid-80s output, is a sweet, humorous ode to a meat-free meal at Grandma's.

The song declares that the true meaning of Thanksgiving Day lies in "Celebrating the joy of living / It's what we're all here for." You can hear the full version of "The Happy Vegan Thanksgiving Song," and songs from Todd McHatton's supercatchy psychedelic pop album for kids, Grass Stained Twilight, at his illustration- and music-filled website.
