The Artists
The Disney corporation is always coming up with ways to re-distribute and cross-market their product, and one of those ways is through their Disneymania CD series. Young stars from various Disney Channel TV shows and Walt Disney Studios films cover classic Disney movie songs on Disneymania 7, rekindling interest in silver screen hits from the past while showcasing their current entertainment roster.
Current stars like Demi Lovato, Drew Seeley, Selena Gomez, and Mitchel Musso share the spotlight with newcomers Alyson Stoner, Tiffany Thornton, and Savannah Outen. Disney-created bands KSM, Honor Society, and Allstar Weekend are featured, as well.
The Music
If you're looking for note-for-note covers of classic Disney movie songs, the Disneymania series is not for you. These tween artists and their producers put their own spin on songs from Disney films like Lady and the Tramp, Meet the Robinsons, and Pocahontas. The styles range from the earnest pop punk of Allstar Weekend ("I Just Can't Wait to Be King"), to Selena Gomez's creepy techno lounge ("Trust in Me"), to the Honor Society's pointless rehash of Sheryl Crow's "Real Gone."
And the definition of "classic movies" gets a little stretched with Disneymania 7. This volume includes tunes from lesser-known films like The Wild and Meet the Robinsons, as well as straight-to-DVD releases like Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure and A Goofy Movie.
The Verdict
For Disney Channel tween pop fans and dedicated Disney movie completists only. Interesting, but not interesting enough to keep on constant rotation in your CD player.
