Thomas Newman's compositions for Disney Pixar's Finding Nemo Soundtrack work both as an evocative movie backdrop and for casual listening at home, making it one of the best Disney Pixar soundtracks ever released.

The Artist

Thomas Newman is an accomplished composer, having won Grammys, Emmys, BAFTAs, Annies, and World Soundtrack Awards for his work. Newman is the cousin of singer/songwriter Randy Newman, who has also composed several soundtracks for Disney Pixar.

The Finding Nemo Soundtrack was Thomas Newman's first soundtrack for Disney Pixar, followed by the WALL-E Soundtrack in 2008. Newman has also composed music for the films The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, and Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, as well as for the television series Six Feet Under and Boston Public.

The Music of Finding Nemo

The Finding Nemo Soundtrack contains a whopping 40 tracks of music, ranging from two-and-a-half minutes long to less than 30 seconds. Thomas Newman perfectly captures the swirling, muted, slow-motion feel of the underwater world with compositions like 'Wow," "Field Trip," and "The Turtle Lope." And tunes like "First Day," "Mr. Ray, Scientist," and "Filter Attempt" are very reminiscent of his work on Six Feet Under, with their skittery rhythms, scraped strings, and barking clarinets.

Other highlights of the Finding Nemo Soundtrack include the wobbly "Fish-O-Rama"; the squishy, Steely Dan-like jazz of "Foolproof"; the sweet "Field Trip;" the quirky "Pelicans;" and the tender "Nemo Egg (Main Title)." And you can truly hear the little fishes' terror in "The Divers," as flutes and recorders are used to mimic their frightened voices. The album ends with British pop star Robbie Williams' campy rendition of Bobby Darin's classic "Beyond the Sea." The tunes "Nemo Egg," "First Day," and "Field Trip" were included on the recently-released Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD.

The Verdict

Newman's work on the Finding Nemo Soundtrack won an Annie Award for "Outstanding Music in an Animated Feature Production" in 2004. Fans of Disney Pixar's Finding Nemo will absolutely love this soundtrack. But the thing is, casual viewers, and even those who haven't seen the film, will enjoy Thomas Newman's eclectic musical view of Nemo's underwater world.
