Walt Disney's Mary Poppins Soundtrack

Courtesy Walt Disney Music / Vista Records
Walt Disney's Mary Poppins Soundtrack contains no less than five absolute classics that transcend genre or age group, including "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Super-Cali-Fragil-Istic-Expi-Ali-Docious," "I Love to Laugh," "Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee," and "Let's Go Fly a Kite." A musical treat for the whole family!

The Artists

The Walt Disney film Mary Poppins and the Mary Poppins Soundtrack are fortunate to host two of the most beloved performers in showbiz history. Julie Andrews had massive success on the silver screen with The Sound of Music, Alfred Hitchcock's Torn Curtain, the film version of James Michener's novel Hawaii, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Victor Victoria, and The Princess Diaries. Andrews also found fame on stage, as well, with such blockbusters as My Fair Lady and Camelot.

Dick Van Dyke first hit the big time on television, culminating with his character Rob Petrie on the incredibly popular The Dick Van Dyke Show, and later as Dr. Mark Sloan on Diagnosis: Murder. Van Dyke made a name for himself on stage with Bye Bye Birdie, later reprising the role on film. Other film successes for Van Dyke included Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The music of Mary Poppins was composed by the Sherman Brothers, who first found success with the Top 10 Billboard hit "Tall Paul," and soon after with the tune "It's a Small World (After All)" written for the 1964 World's Fair. Robert and Richard Sherman have the distinction of composing more musical movie scores than any other songwriting team in history. Some of their best known musical works include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Jungle Book, Charlotte's Web, and The Aristocats.

Music from Walt Disney's 'Mary Poppins Soundtrack'

The Mary Poppins Soundtrack begins with an "Overture" that wordlessly links together all the musical themes from the movie. Then follows "The Perfect Nanny" as the characters Jane and Michael Banks describe their version of the ideal caregiver. "Sister Suffragette" is a nice little slice of social history condensed into two minutes by Mrs. Banks, while Mr. Banks provides a more orderly, male-dominated counterpoint with "The Life I Lead." Mary Poppins then arrives on the scene and offers "A Spoonful of Sugar" to put a bright side on life's tasks. Bert is a man of many trades, and he loves being a "Pavement Artist" as he first introduces us to the tune "Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee." Bert and Mary sing of their admiration for the other in the cheerful "Jolly Holiday," and the absolutely exuberant "Super-Cali-Fragil-Istic-Expi-Ali-Docious" celebrates the joy of letters and words. Side one of the original album ends with the dreamy "Stay Awake," Mary Poppins' reverse psychology lullaby.

More Music from Walt Disney's 'Mary Poppins Soundtrack'

Uncle Albert shows up for the silly but joyful "I Love to Laugh," while Mr. Banks feels his work at "A British Bank" is more meaningful and fulfilling than his children's playful outings with Mary Poppins. The melancholy "Feed the Birds" reminds us to keep in mind those who aren't as fortunate as us, whereas Mr. Banks returns with the board of the "Fidelity Fiduciary Bank" to argue that the same tuppence given to the bird lady should instead be invested. "Chim-Chim-Cher-Ee" is reprised in a more up tempo version, describing Bert's satisfaction with his work as a chimney sweep, followed by the absolutely rowdy sing-along follow-the-leader song "Step in Time." Mr. Banks and Bert discuss the true meaning of life in the gentle "A Man Has Dreams," and finally Mr. Banks sees the light and suggests "Let's Go Fly a Kite," a joyful classic that will have everyone singing along.

The Verdict

The CD re-release of the Mary Poppins Soundtrack is packed with extra songs and additional dialogue, but this original vinyl LP version is a treasure itself. For fans of the movie, collectors of Walt Disney soundtracks, or for lovers of great albums for kids and their families, the Mary Poppins Soundtrack is a must-have.
