Erratic Schematic, Mr. Leebot's third CD of DEVO-inspired music for kids, includes tunes about families, movement, imagination, and a reindeer!

The Artist

If you've never heard Mr. Leebot, think DEVO without the ironic, biting, sarcastic comments on modern life; Bruce Haack without the head-scratching weirdness; Ween without the drugs and scatalogical humor; a sprinkling of Neil Young's Trans project, and a touch of rockabilly twang. Before his incarnation as Mr. Leebot, Austin, TX, resident Lee Davila stirred the musical pot with several spoons. Davila's other projects, including The Grown-Ups and Manager's Choice, revealed Davila's Ska and New Wave influences. He has released three albums of new wave, electronic music for families: Activate! in 2008, Robot Dance in 2009, and this year's Erratic Scematic.

The Music of 'Erratic Schematic'

One thing Mr. Leebot gets bonus points for right off the bat is song length: over half the 13 songs on Erratic Schematic are less than two minutes long. Short, punchy, pop tunes throughout!

The album kicks off with "Bright Ideas," a high-octane polka/electronica hybrid about kids' brain power, along with the Kraftwerk-like "Cleaning Theme" and the robotic ska of "Night Light." Several musical nods to DEVO appear on Erratic Schematic, including "Body Mechanics," a great group participation song for the preschool classroom; the imagination-stretching "Inside-Out House"; and the very enthusiastic crustacean tribute "Mrs. Hermit Crab."

The centerpiece of Erratic Schematic has to be "Our Family," an electronic pop rock gem that celebrates the joyous beauty of ALL families. "Our Family" reflects Mr. and Mrs. Leebot's efforts to adopt two children from an Ethiopian orphanage. Dig these lines: "I don't care what others think about our family tree; The wind may shake the branches, but the leaves will never leave." You can follow updates of the highs and lows of their adoption process on Mr. Leebot's blog.

As the album comes to a close, you can imagine what your "Superpower" might be, accompanied by video game blips; you can herky-jerk to the space-age rockabilly movement song "Itchy Scratchy"; you can bob yer head to the raptastic "Rock the Block"; and rock out to another supercatchy DEVO-like tune, "High Five." Erratic Schematic closes out with an absolutely one-of-a-kind cover of Johnny Marks' Christmas classic "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Add it to your Yuletide playlist!

The Verdict

If you and your junior rockers are looking for something off the beaten musical path, Mr. Leebot's Erratic Schematic is just the thing. Davila is equally influenced by DEVO, Carl Perkins, ska, and 8-bit Nintendo sounds, and draws on all those musical muses to create unique, fun tunes. Erratic Schematic will have you and your little bots inventing dances for the livingroom dance floor!
