The Artist
Thomas Newman is an accomplished composer, having won GRAMMYs, Emmys, BAFTAs, Annies, and World Soundtrack Awards for his work. Newman is the cousin of singer/songwriter Randy Newman, who has also composed several soundtracks for Disney Pixar.
The WALL•E Soundtrack was Thomas Newman's second soundtrack for Disney Pixar, after the Finding Nemo Soundtrack in 2003. Newman has also composed music for the films The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, and Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, as well as for the television series Six Feet Under and Boston Public.
The Music of WALL•E
"WALL•E," the main character's theme song, is immediately recognizable as a Thomas Newman composition, as it closely resembles his work on Six Feet Under with its struck strings and staccato clarinets. Newman co-wrote the beautifully hypnotic music of "EVE," "Define Dancing," and "Down to Earth" with Peter Gabriel, and Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics to and performed the tune "Down to Earth," the highlight of the WALL•E Soundtrack.
WALL•E's fascination with the film Hello, Dolly! is reflected on the WALL•E Soundtrack by Michael Crawford's performances of "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "It Only Takes a Moment," a wonderful point in the movie where WALL•E and EVE hold hands like the characters in Hello, Dolly!.
Other standout tracks include "BNL," the amusingly kitschy jingle for the Buy n Large company; the retro lounge sound of "First Date," with its "baa daa daa" vocals; the New Age vibe of "Horizon 12.2;" the thrilling action of "The Spaceship," and Louis Armstrong's performance of "La Vie en Rose." The tunes "Down to Earth," "Define Dancing," and "First Date" were included on the recently-released Disney Pixar Greatest Soundtrack CD.
The Verdict
Thomas Newman and Peter Gabriel were awarded GRAMMYs for their efforts on the WALL•E Soundtrack: "Down to Earth" was chosen "Best Song Written for Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media," while "Define Dancing" won "Best Instrumental Arrangement" at the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2008. "Down to Earth" also won a World Soundtrack Award for "Best Original Song Written Directly for Film." The WALL•E Soundtrack as a whole is a winning collection of beautiful, eclectic, touching, and exciting tunes that will definitely be listened to over and over again.
