"Over the River and Through the Wood" - Dog On Fleas

Considered the unofficial anthem of Thanksgiving, this poem was written by Lydia Maria Child and originally published in Flowers for Children, Vol. 2 in 1844. This is a quiet, pretty version by Dog On Fleas, flavored by a pedal-steel guitar and Debbie Lan's voice. You can find the tune on their 2003 album Cranberry Sauce Flotilla.

"Thanksgiving Theme" - Vince Guaraldi Trio

Courtesy Fantasy Records
Even though this is an instrumental tune, it'll get everyone in the Thanksgiving mood. Guaraldi composed this song for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, which originally aired in 1973. An official soundtrack was never released for this Peanuts special, but you can find "Thanksgiving Theme" on Fantasy Records' 1998 CD Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits.

"Thanksgiving Song" - The Uncle Brothers

This cheerful, countryish shuffle is all about food, family, and fun. The Uncle Brothers included their ode to Thanksgiving on the 2007 CD Mooseletoe.

"(I'm Gonna Eat) On Thanksgiving Day" - Laurie Berkner

Here's a fun, a cappella round from Laurie Berkner's 1997 debut kids' album Whaddaya Think of That?.

"Thanksgiving Day" - John McCutcheon

This strident piano ballad reminds us of everything we should be thankful for. Cowritten with Si Kahn (see below) and originally released in 1998 on the album John McCutcheon's Four Seasons: Autumnsongs.

"Thanksgiving with Aunt Pearl" - Erin Lee and Marci

Erin Lee Kelly and Marci Appelbaum rejoice in the fact that they finally get to sit at the grownup table for Thanksgiving dinner! This rambunctious rock tune is from their second kids' CD Snowdance, released in 2006.

"Happy Thanksgiving" - Debbie Friedman

A rousing sing-along by one of the most popular creators of Jewish music. Her amusing Thanksgiving folk song was recorded live in southern California in 1990 and released on the album Live at the Del. "Aren't you glad you're not a turkey on this Thanksgiving Day?"

"My Mom's Thanksgiving Dinner" - Children from New York P.S. 24

Courtesy Smithsonian Folkways
Gil Slote was a teacher at P.S 24 in Brooklyn, where he organized a children's singing group. The kids sang these songs on WNYC radio and the CBS television program On the Carousel, as well as recording them for Folkways Records in 1956. Musical side note: one of the kids in the class, Lenny Hutter, went on to sing in the Brooklyn doo-wop groups The Five Discs and The Chalets.

"Thanksgiving" - Si Kahn

Courtesy Strictly Country Records
The title tune from Kahn's 2007 album reminds everyone of all the things we should be thankful for. Kahn gets vocal help on this gentle tune from Annemarieke Coenders and Linde Nijland from the group Ygdrassil. Musical side note: Kahn's son Gabe is a member of the Asheville, NC, indie rap coalition Granola Funk Express, whose fellow member Secret Agent 23 Skidoo recently made an award-winning kid hop album called Easy.

"Over the River and Through the Woods" - Quincy Choral Society

Courtesy Quincy Choral Society
Here's a nice version of "Over the River" sung by the children of the Quincy Choral Society, accompanied by piano. The "school presentation" feel of the recording should appeal to kids and families alike, from learning the song for the first time to listening to the tune by the fireplace. From the 2003 CD Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.
